People often write about the various senses that we have – of touch, of sight, of taste, of hearing.. but very little is written about the sense of smell. And yet I think it is such an amazing sense.
Sniff in something, and it has the ability to take you to far off lands, to time gone back. The experience is relived.
The smell of your mother is so filled with warmth.
The smell of hot chocolate.
The smell of wazwaan…oh as I write it down I can actually smell the rista’s boiling…
The smell of petrol..
The smell of rain falling on dry earth
I can close my eyes and think of a smell and it takes me to the far off place, in a gone by time.
ah! for the sense of smell.. we ought to say Alhamdulillah!
You might want to read this. I love this poem I read as a child:
Smells
WHY is it that the poet tells
So little of the sense of smell?
These are the odors I love well:
The smell of coffee freshly ground;
Or rich plum pudding, holly crowned;
Or onions fried and deeply browned.
The fragrance of a fumy pipe;
The smell of apples, newly ripe;
And printer’s ink on leaden type.
Woods by moonlight in September
Breathe most sweet, and I remember
Many a smoky camp-fire ember.
Camphor, turpentine, and tea,
The balsam of a Christmas tree,
These are whiffs of gramarye. . .
A ship smells best of all to me!
